CE 101: Engineering SurveyingCut/Fill Grid Tool

Cut and Fill for a Whole Site

25 ft × 25 ft contour-practice site, 5-ft grid. Choose a design (proposed) elevation.

Design elevation
Cut only Fill only Mixed (both) Point: existing elevation (top), depth d (bold). Cell center: net volume, ft³.
Totals

Method
Depth at each point: d = Zproposed − Zexisting (positive = fill, negative = cut).
For each 5 ft × 5 ft cell (25 ft²): d̄ = (d1+d2+d3+d4)/4, then V = 25 d̄. V > 0 is net fill and V < 0 is net cut. Fill total = sum of the positive cell volumes; cut total = sum of the negative ones (as positive numbers).
Cut and fill that occur inside the same mixed cell cancel, so totals are net per cell. Final in-place volumes; compaction, swell, topsoil and side slopes are ignored. 27 ft³ = 1 yd³.
